Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef, turkey, or chorizo

  • 1 packet taco seasoning

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened

  • 1 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt

  • 2 cups shredded Mexican blend cheese (or cheddar and Monterey Jack)

  • ½ cup salsa or diced green chiles

  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions or fresh cilantro

  • Tortilla chips (for lining the dish and serving)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking dish or a cast-iron skillet.

  2. Cook the Meat: In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground meat until completely browned. Drain any excess grease. Stir in the taco seasoning along with the water amount specified on the packet, and simmer for 3–4 minutes until thick and flavorful.

  3. Mix the Creamy Base: In a large bowl, mix together the softened cream cheese, sour cream, and salsa until smooth and well combined. Fold in half of the shredded cheese and the seasoned meat.

  4. Assemble the Dip: Spread the creamy meat mixture evenly into your prepared baking dish. Top with the remaining shredded cheese.

  5. Add Tortilla Chips: Arrange a border of tortilla chips upright around the inner edges of the dish, pressing them slightly into the dip mixture.

  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the dip is hot, bubbly, and the cheese on top is melted and slightly golden brown.

  7. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with chopped green onions or cilantro, and serve immediately with extra tortilla chips on the side.
