Ingredients
- 8 slices thick white or brioche bread
- 8–10 slices deli ham
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme or parsley, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a small baking dish.
- In a bowl, mix the softened cream cheese, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, garlic, Italian seasoning, and black pepper until smooth.
- Spread the cream cheese mixture over one side of each bread slice.
- Place a layer of ham over four slices, then add mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
- Top with the remaining bread slices to create four thick sandwiches.
- Arrange the sandwiches snugly in the prepared baking dish.
- Brush the tops with melted butter and sprinkle with a little extra shredded cheese and red pepper flakes if desired.
- Bake for 18–22 minutes, until the bread is crisp and the cheese is completely melted.
- For an extra-golden top, broil for 1–2 minutes, watching carefully so it doesn’t burn.
- Remove from the oven, let rest for 3–5 minutes, then garnish with fresh thyme or parsley. Slice and serve warm.
Pro Tips
- Use thick-cut bread so the sandwiches hold their shape.
- Gruyère, Swiss, provolone, or Monterey Jack can be substituted for the cheese.
- Add caramelized onions or sautéed mushrooms for extra flavor.
- For the crispiest topping, finish briefly under the broiler.
- Serve immediately while the cheese is hot, stretchy, and gooey.
