Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients:

For the Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup finely diced onion
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/2 cup onion, diced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional Garnish:

  • Chopped fresh parsley or chives

Instructions:

Make the Salisbury Steaks:
  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well and shape into 4-6 oval patties.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and cook the patties until browned on both sides (about 3-4 minutes per side). Remove and set aside.
Prepare the Gravy:
  1. In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add mushrooms and onions, cooking until softened and lightly browned.
  2. Stir in the flour, cooking for 1-2 minutes until golden.
  3. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and let thicken (about 3-5 minutes).
Combine:
  1. Return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet, nestling them in the gravy. Cover and let simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
Serve:
  1. Serve the Salisbury steaks over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Spoon the mushroom gravy generously over the top.
  2. Garnish with chopped parsley or chives for a fresh finish.
