Italian Sub Squares
Components
Regarding the Bread:
- 1 pound of handmade or chilled pizza dough
Regarding the Filling:
- 8 ounces of sliced salami
- Eight ounces of sliced ham
- 8 ounces of sliced provolone cheese
- One cup of drained and sliced roasted red peppers
- One cup of fresh arugula or spinach
- ½ cup of black olives, cut (if desired)
- Half a cup of Italian dressing
Topping:
- 1 tsp of Italian spice
- ¼ cup of optionally grated Parmesan cheese
Guidelines
1. Turn on the oven:
- Turn the oven on to 375°F, or 190°C.
2. Get the dough ready:
- Using a lightly floured surface, roll out the pizza dough to fit a 9 x 13-inch baking sheet that has been oiled. Firmly press it into the pan’s bottom and up its sides.
3. Arrange the Ingredients in Layers:
- Beginning with the fillings layered on top of the dough:
- Start with the ham and salami.
- Go ahead and add the provolone.
- Add the spinach, roasted red peppers, and black olives (if using) in layers.
- Evenly drizzle the layers with the Italian dressing.
4. Include the top layer
- To cover the top, roll out some more pizza dough. To seal it with the bottom dough, press the edges.
5. Bake and season:
- Drizzle a little olive oil over the top, then top with Parmesan cheese (if using) and Italian seasoning.
- Bake until the top is golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes.
6. Chill and Cut:
- Before cutting into squares, let the subs cool for ten to fifteen minutes.
7. Present:
- Heat or serve room temperature. Serve these with a side dish of marinara sauce for dipping or just as is!
