Pan-Seared Honey Garlic Chili Tofu (or Fish)

This mouthwatering dish features thick slabs that have been scored, pan-seared to a golden-brown perfection, and drenched in a vibrant, sweet-and-spicy glaze topped with fresh herbs and chili flakes.

Ingredients

  • Main Ingredient:

    • 1 block of extra-firm tofu (pressed and sliced into thick slabs) or 4 firm white fish fillets (like cod or halibut)

  • Glaze & Sauce:

    • 3 tbsp soy sauce

    • 2 tbsp honey or brown sugar

    • 1 tbsp rice vinegar

    • 2 cloves garlic (minced)

    • 1 tsp ginger (minced)

    • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes or chili oil

    • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (slurry)

  • Toppings & Cooking:

    • 2 tbsp cooking oil (for searing)

    • Fresh cilantro or green onions (chopped, for garnish)

    • Sesame seeds (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Score and Sear: Lightly score a diamond or crosshatch pattern across the top of your tofu slabs or fish fillets. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the pieces until golden brown and crispy on both sides. Remove and set aside on a serving plate.

  • Make the Sauce: In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium. Add the minced garlic and ginger, sautéing for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Stir in the soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, and red pepper flakes.

  • Thicken: Pour in the cornstarch slurry and let the sauce simmer for 1–2 minutes until it thickens into a glossy, rich glaze.

  • Coat and Garnish: Pour the hot glaze generously over the seared tofu or fish. Garnish with chopped fresh cilantro, green onions, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds before serving.
